Ingredients
1 lb Challah or Brioche bread, cubed (about 8–10 cups)
3 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
4 tbsp unsalted butter
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
4 large eggs
1.5 cups heavy cream
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup quality bourbon
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp salt
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
Step 2: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced apples and brown sugar, sautéing for 8-10 minutes until the apples are tender and caramelized.
Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, bourbon, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
Step 4: Place the bread cubes into the prepared baking dish. Distribute the sautéed apples and any pan juices over the bread cubes.
Step 5: Pour the custard mixture over the bread and apples. Use a spoon to gently press down on the bread to ensure it is fully submerged.
Step 6: Let the mixture sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
Step 7: Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set in the center.
Step 8: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving warm with whipped cream or caramel sauce.
Notes
For best results, use day-old bread that is slightly dry. If your bread is fresh, toast the cubes in a 300°F oven for 10 minutes before starting.
