Ingredients
6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×9 inch baking dish.
Step 2: In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon until evenly coated.
Step 3: Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading them out into an even layer.
Step 4: In another bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, remaining cinnamon, and salt.
Step 5: Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the cold butter into the oat mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 6: Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
Step 7: Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
Step 8: Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes before serving warm with ice cream.
Notes
Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for the best flavor profile. Always use cold butter for the crispest topping.
