Ingredients
1 prepared gingerbread cake (approx. 9x9 inch), cubed
6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
1/2 cup brown sugar
4 tbsp unsalted butter
2 tsp ground cinnamon
3 cups heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup caramel sauce (optional for drizzling)
Ginger snap cookies for garnish
Instructions
Step 1: Bake the gingerbread cake according to your favorite recipe or package instructions and allow it to cool completely before cutting into 1-inch cubes.
Step 2: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and add the sliced apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cook for 8-10 minutes until the apples are tender but still hold their shape. Let them cool to room temperature.
Step 3: In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
Step 4: In a large glass trifle bowl, place a single layer of gingerbread cake cubes at the bottom.
Step 5: Top the cake layer with a portion of the sautéed apples and a drizzle of caramel sauce if desired.
Step 6: Spread a layer of the whipped cream over the apples.
Step 7: Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a final layer of whipped cream on top.
Step 8: Chill the trifle in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or overnight, to allow the flavors to meld. Garnish with crushed ginger snaps before serving.
Notes
For best results, make the gingerbread cake a day in advance so it is easy to cube.
