A tender, chewy mochi cake bursting with the rich, nutty flavor of black sesame, offering a delightful balance of sweetness and earthy notes. This gluten-free baked good is a unique and satisfying dessert.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups glutinous rice flour (Mochiko)
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup black sesame powder (from toasted and ground seeds)
1 (13.5 oz) can full-fat coconut milk
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
Optional: additional black sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk together the glutinous rice flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and black sesame powder. Ensure there are no lumps.
Step 3: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the coconut milk, whole milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Step 4: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix with a whisk or spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few small lumps are acceptable.
Step 5: Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
Step 6: Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Step 7: Let the Black Sesame Mochi Cake cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before slicing and serving. For easy storage of any leftovers, consider using reliable Basics Glass Food Storage containers to keep your Black Sesame Desserts fresh.
Step 8: Garnish with a sprinkle of toasted black sesame seeds, if desired, before serving this delightful Black Sesame Dessert.

Notes

For best texture, serve warm or at room temperature. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat briefly in the microwave for a fresh-baked feel.
