caipirinha recipe - A fresh Brazilian Caipirinha cocktail in a rocks glass with lime wedges and ice.

Classic Brazilian Caipirinha

The authentic national cocktail of Brazil made with Cachaça, fresh lime, and sugar.

  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 1 drink 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 large lime, cut into wedges
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
2 ounces (60ml) Cachaça
Crushed ice or ice cubes
Extra lime wheel for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Cut the lime into small wedges and remove the white pith from the center to prevent bitterness.
Step 2: Place the lime wedges and the granulated sugar into a sturdy rocks glass.
Step 3: Use a muddler to firmly press and twist the limes, extracting the juice and essential oils from the peel to dissolve the sugar.
Step 4: Fill the glass to the top with crushed ice or small ice cubes.
Step 5: Pour the Cachaça over the ice and stir well with a long spoon to incorporate the ingredients from the bottom.
Step 6: Garnish with a lime wheel and serve immediately.

Notes

Always use fresh limes; bottled lime juice will not work for this recipe as the oils from the peel are essential for the flavor profile.
