Ingredients
4 large Granny Smith apples, sliced
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Optional: 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Heavy-duty aluminum foil
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare your campfire or grill until you have a steady bed of hot coals rather than high, active flames.
Step 2: In a large bowl or storage container, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until evenly coated.
Step 3: Cut four large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil and divide the apple mixture evenly onto the center of each sheet.
Step 4: Top each pile of apples with one tablespoon of butter pieces and optional nuts, then fold the campfire apple pie packets securely using the hobo-fold method.
Step 5: Place the packets on the coals or a grill grate and cook for 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally, until the apples are tender and the sauce is bubbly.
Notes
Always use heavy-duty foil to prevent leaks. If cooking in an oven, bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes.
