Beautiful homemade cinnamon ornaments hanging on a Christmas tree

Cinnamon Ornament Recipe

A delightful and easy cinnamon ornament recipe to fill your home with the warm, comforting scent of the holidays. Perfect for crafting with family!

  • Total Time: 20 minutes prep + 2-7 days drying
  • Yield: 15-20 ornaments (depending on size) 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup ground cinnamon
¾ cup unsweetened applesauce
2 tablespoons white school glue (like Elmer’s)

Instructions

Step 1: In a large bowl, combine the ground cinnamon, applesauce, and white school glue. Mix thoroughly with a sturdy spoon or your hands until a stiff, uniform dough forms. It should be firm enough to handle without being too sticky.
Step 2: Turn the dough out onto a surface lightly dusted with extra ground cinnamon. Knead the dough gently for a few minutes until it’s smooth and pliable. This helps integrate all the ingredients and makes it easier to roll.
Step 3: Using a rolling pin, roll the dough evenly to about 1/4-inch thickness. Ensure the thickness is consistent across the entire sheet of dough for even drying.
Step 4: Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out shapes from the rolled dough. Carefully transfer the cut-outs to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Re-roll any dough scraps and cut out more shapes until all the dough is used.
Step 5: Before drying, use a straw or a skewer to create a small hole near the top of each ornament. This hole is where you’ll thread ribbon or string for hanging later.
Step 6: Allow the ornaments to air dry completely. Depending on humidity and thickness, this can take 2-7 days. Flip them periodically (every 12-24 hours) to ensure even drying and prevent curling. Alternatively, place them in a very low oven (around 150°F / 65°C) for 1-2 hours to speed up the process, being careful not to bake them.
Step 7: Once completely dry and hard, thread festive ribbons, twine, or string through the holes. Your beautiful and fragrant cinnamon ornament recipe creations are now ready to adorn your tree, wreaths, or even tie onto gifts!

Notes

These ornaments are for decorative purposes only and are not edible. Store finished ornaments in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to help preserve their scent for the next holiday season.
