Ingredients
1 cup mixed berries (fresh or frozen)
1 tablespoon water
1–2 teaspoons maple syrup or honey (for compote, or to taste)
1/4 cup chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts, or pecans)
3 cups milk (dairy or non-dairy)
Pinch of salt
1/2 cup Cream of Wheat (original or whole grain)
1 tablespoon butter (optional)
1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey (for Cream of Wheat, or to taste)
Instructions
Step 1: In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of mixed berries, 1 tablespoon of water, and 1-2 teaspoons of your preferred sweetener. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat.
Step 2: Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries break down and the sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat and set aside.
Step 3: While the compote simmers, place 1/4 cup of chopped nuts in a small, dry skillet over medium-low heat. Toast for 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until fragrant and lightly golden. Remove from heat and set aside.
Step 4: In a medium saucepan, bring 3 cups of milk and a pinch of salt to a boil over medium-high heat.
Step 5: Once boiling, slowly whisk in 1/2 cup of Cream of Wheat to prevent lumps. Continue whisking for about 30 seconds until fully incorporated.
Step 6: Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring frequently, for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes for original Cream of Wheat, or 5-7 minutes for whole grain, until it reaches your desired thickness.
Step 7: Remove from heat. Stir in 1 tablespoon of butter (optional) and 1 tablespoon of your preferred sweetener. Taste and adjust sweetness if desired.
Step 8: Pour the cooked Cream of Wheat into a serving bowl. Spoon a generous amount of the warm berry compote over the top.
Step 9: Sprinkle with the toasted nuts and serve immediately. Enjoy this delightful addition to your cream of wheat recipes repertoire!
Notes
For an even creamier result, use whole milk. If using plant-based milk, oat milk often provides the best creamy texture. Adjust sweetener to your personal preference, especially if your berries are very sweet or tart. This is one of the most adaptable cream of wheat recipes!
