Homemade Dandelion Root and Leaf Tea

A nourishing and detoxifying herbal tea made from fresh or dried dandelion roots and leaves, perfect for supporting digestion and overall wellness. This simple dandelion tea recipe connects you to nature’s bounty.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1/4 cup fresh dandelion roots, scrubbed and chopped (or 2 tbsp dried dandelion root)
1/2 cup fresh dandelion leaves, washed and chopped (or 1 tbsp dried dandelion leaf)
4 cups filtered water
Optional: Honey, maple syrup, lemon slice, or ginger slice for serving

Instructions

Step 1: Thoroughly wash fresh dandelion roots and leaves. If using fresh roots, scrub them clean to remove all soil.
Step 2: Chop the cleaned roots into small, 1/4 to 1/2 inch pieces. Roughly chop the leaves.
Step 3: (Optional: For a richer, coffee-like flavor) Spread the chopped roots on a baking sheet. Roast in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for 20-30 minutes, or until fragrant and lightly browned. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
Step 4: Combine the chopped dandelion roots (roasted or unroasted) and leaves in a saucepan or teapot.
Step 5: Bring 4 cups of filtered water to a boil in a separate pot.
Step 6: Pour the boiling water over the dandelion pieces in the saucepan or teapot.
Step 7: Cover and steep for 5-10 minutes for leaves, or 10-15 minutes for roots, or longer for a stronger tea.
Step 8: Strain the tea through a fine-mesh sieve into mugs, pressing the solids to extract all liquid.
Step 9: Serve hot, optionally sweetened with honey or maple syrup, and garnished with a slice of lemon or ginger. Enjoy your homemade dandelion tea recipe!

Notes

Always ensure dandelions are harvested from pesticide-free areas. Roasting the roots enhances their flavor, giving the tea a coffee-like richness. Adjust steeping time to your preferred strength. This dandelion tea recipe is versatile!
