Dirt Cake Recipe - A glass bowl filled with layers of white cream and chocolate cookie crumbs, topped with gummy worms.

Classic Homemade Dirt Cake

A nostalgic, no-bake dessert featuring layers of creamy vanilla filling and crushed chocolate sandwich cookies, topped with gummy worms for a fun, ‘earthy’ look.

  • Total Time: 3 hours 20 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 package (14.3 oz) Chocolate Sandwich Cookies (e.g., Oreos)
1 package (8 oz) Cream Cheese, softened
1/4 cup Butter, softened
1 cup Powdered Sugar
2 packages (3.4 oz each) Instant Vanilla Pudding Mix
3 cups Cold Milk
1 container (12 oz) Frozen Whipped Topping, thawed
1 package Gummy Worms
Fresh Mint Sprigs (optional for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Place the chocolate sandwich cookies in a food processor and pulse until they become fine crumbs resembling dirt. Set aside.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until completely smooth and creamy.
Step 3: Sift the powdered sugar into the cream cheese mixture and beat until well combined.
Step 4: In a separate bowl, whisk together the cold milk and both packages of instant vanilla pudding for 2 minutes until thickened.
Step 5: Fold the thickened pudding into the cream cheese mixture until no streaks remain.
Step 6: Gently fold in the thawed whipped topping until the mixture is light and uniform.
Step 7: In a large bowl or flower pot, start with a layer of cookie crumbs, then a layer of the cream mixture. Repeat layers, finishing with a thick layer of cookie crumbs on top.
Step 8: Refrigerate for at least 3-4 hours (or overnight) to allow the dessert to set properly.
Step 9: Just before serving, decorate the top with gummy worms and optional mint sprigs to complete the ‘garden’ look.

Notes

For a firmer texture, ensure the pudding is fully set before mixing with the cream cheese. Always use instant pudding, not the cook-and-serve variety.
