Dirty Spaghetti Recipe

A hearty, flavorful twist on classic spaghetti, packed with savory ground meat (beef and sausage), rich tomato sauce, and a secret blend of seasonings that makes it incredibly addictive. Perfect for family dinners and guaranteed to become a household favorite.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 tbsp olive oil
1 lb ground beef (80/20 or 90/10)
1/2 lb ground Italian sausage (mild or hot)
1 large onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp tomato paste
28 oz can crushed tomatoes (good quality, e.g., San Marzano)
1 cup beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp dried Italian seasoning
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp dried basil
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for a kick)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 lb spaghetti
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Heat olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and Italian sausage. Break up the meat with a spoon and cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess fat, leaving about 1-2 tablespoons in the pot.
Step 2: Add chopped onion and bell pepper to the pot. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, until softened and translucent. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Step 3: Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, allowing it to deepen in color and flavor.
Step 4: Pour in the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Add Italian seasoning, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 30 minutes, or up to an hour, stirring occasionally.
Step 5: While the sauce simmers, bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add spaghetti and cook according to package directions until al dente, typically 8-10 minutes. Reserve about 1 cup of pasta water before draining.
Step 6: Drain the cooked spaghetti thoroughly.
Step 7: Once the sauce has simmered, taste and adjust seasonings if needed. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of the reserved pasta water until it reaches your desired consistency.
Step 8: Add the drained spaghetti directly to the pot with the sauce. Toss everything together until the pasta is thoroughly coated.
Step 9: Serve the dirty spaghetti hot, garnished with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley. Enjoy this comforting dirty spaghetti recipe!

Notes

For best flavor, let the sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes, or even longer. You can make the sauce ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or freeze it for up to 3 months. Combine with freshly cooked pasta just before serving. Add a splash of red wine to the sauce while simmering for extra depth.
