A glass dish filled with layers of creamy banana pudding, vanilla wafers, and sliced bananas, topped with whipped cream and more wafers.

The Ultimate Easy Banana Pudding

A classic Southern dessert that’s creamy, sweet, and incredibly satisfying. Layers of vanilla wafers, fresh banana slices, and a rich, velvety pudding come together in this simplified, yet authentic, easy banana pudding recipe.

  • Total Time: 4 hours 20 minutes (includes chilling)
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

2 (3.4 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
4 cups cold milk (whole milk or 2% recommended for creaminess)
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed (or 3 cups homemade whipped cream)
1 (12 ounce) box vanilla wafers
5–6 ripe but firm bananas, sliced

Instructions

Step 1: In a large bowl, whisk together the instant vanilla pudding mixes and cold milk for 2 minutes, until thickened. Set aside for 5 minutes to allow it to set further.
Step 2: In a separate large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Gradually beat in the sweetened condensed milk until well combined and smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Step 3: Gently fold the thawed whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture until no streaks remain. Be careful not to overmix, as this can deflate the whipped topping.
Step 4: Add the pudding mixture from Step 1 to the cream cheese mixture from Step 3. Fold gently until everything is just combined. You now have your rich, creamy banana pudding base!
Step 5: Begin assembling your easy banana pudding. In a 9×13 inch serving dish, spread a thin layer of the pudding mixture on the bottom. This helps prevent the wafers from sliding.
Step 6: Arrange a single layer of vanilla wafers over the pudding. Break some wafers if needed to fit the spaces.
Step 7: Place a layer of sliced bananas over the wafers. Try to cover as much surface area as possible.
Step 8: Spoon about one-third of the remaining pudding mixture evenly over the bananas. Gently spread it to cover.
Step 9: Repeat the layers: wafers, then bananas, then pudding. Continue until you’ve used all your ingredients, ending with a generous layer of pudding on top.
Step 10: Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the wafers to soften.
Step 11: Before serving, you can garnish with extra vanilla wafers, fresh banana slices (tossed in a little lemon juice to prevent browning), or a sprinkle of cinnamon. Enjoy your homemade easy banana pudding recipe!

Notes

For best results, allow the pudding to chill overnight. This gives the wafers ample time to soften and absorb the creamy goodness, resulting in a more cohesive and delicious dessert. Use ripe but firm bananas to prevent them from becoming too mushy.
