Easy Strawberry Shortcake Puppy Chow

This Easy Strawberry Shortcake Puppy Chow is a delightful no-bake treat that combines crispy rice cereal with melted white chocolate, butter, strawberry cake mix, and powdered sugar for a nostalgic, fruity, and sweet snack. Perfect for parties, gifts, or a quick dessert craving.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 10-12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

9 cups crispy rice cereal (such as Chex)
12 oz good quality white chocolate chips or melting wafers
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 cup strawberry cake mix (dry, from a box)
2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

Step 1: Pour the 9 cups of crispy rice cereal into a very large mixing bowl.
Step 2: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the white chocolate chips and butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each, until the mixture is completely melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat.
Step 3: Pour the melted white chocolate and butter mixture over the cereal in the large bowl. Gently fold with a rubber spatula until every piece of cereal is evenly coated.
Step 4: In a large, sturdy resealable bag (like a 2.5-gallon Ziploc bag), combine the dry strawberry cake mix and powdered sugar. Shake the bag gently to combine them well.
Step 5: Carefully transfer the chocolate-coated cereal into the bag with the cake mix and powdered sugar. Seal the bag, leaving some air inside. Shake vigorously for 2-3 minutes, tumbling the cereal around until every piece is completely coated with the pink, powdery mixture.
Step 6: Spread the coated puppy chow onto a large sheet of parchment paper or wax paper, or into a shallow baking dish. Let it cool completely at room temperature for about 15-30 minutes, or until the chocolate has set.
Step 7: Once cooled, break up any larger clumps. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Notes

For best results, use a very large bowl for mixing the cereal and chocolate to ensure even coating. If you’re concerned about using raw cake mix, you can lightly toast it on a baking sheet at 300°F (150°C) for 5-10 minutes, then cool completely before using. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
