Ingredients
1 loaf (approx 1 lb) Brioche or Challah bread, cubed
8 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 tbsp vanilla extract
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
Pinch of salt
Optional: 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/4 cup melted butter for topping
Instructions
Step 1: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish and fill it with the cubed bread pieces evenly.
Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
Step 3: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are moistened.
Step 4: Cover the dish tightly and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Step 5: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). If using the topping, mix brown sugar and melted butter and drizzle over the bread.
Step 6: Bake for 45-50 minutes until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
Notes
For best results, use bread that is slightly stale or toasted in a low oven for 10 minutes before soaking.
