Ingredients
8 slices of thick-cut bread (brioche, challah, or Texas toast recommended)
4 large eggs
1 cup whole milk (or half-and-half/heavy cream for richer toast)
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of ground nutmeg (optional)
Pinch of salt
1–2 tablespoons unsalted butter or neutral oil, for cooking
Powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh berries for serving (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Bread. Slice your chosen bread into thick 3/4-inch to 1-inch slices. For best results, use day-old or slightly stale bread.
Step 2: Whisk the Custard. In a shallow dish or pie plate, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt until well combined and frothy.
Step 3: Preheat Your Griddle or Pan. Place a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1-2 tablespoons of butter or oil and let it melt and swirl to coat the surface.
Step 4: Dip the Bread. Carefully place one slice of bread into the custard mixture, allowing it to soak for about 10-15 seconds per side. Ensure it’s fully coated but not oversaturated.
Step 5: Cook the French Toast. Gently lift the soaked bread, letting any excess custard drip off, and place it onto the preheated griddle. Cook for 2-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Repeat with remaining slices, adding more butter/oil as needed.
Step 6: Keep Warm (Optional). If cooking in batches, you can keep finished french toast warm on a baking sheet in a preheated oven at 200°F (95°C).
Step 7: Serve & Enjoy! Stack the golden french toast on plates and serve immediately with your favorite toppings like powdered sugar, maple syrup, and fresh berries.
Notes
For the best texture, always use thick-cut, day-old bread. Do not overcrowd the cooking pan to ensure even browning. Adjust sugar and spices to your preference. This french toast recipe is a fantastic base for endless variations!
