The Ultimate Homemade Fresh Salsa

This ultimate homemade fresh salsa recipe is bursting with vibrant flavors, featuring ripe tomatoes, zesty lime, fresh cilantro, and a hint of jalapeño. Perfect for dipping, topping, or enhancing any meal.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 4 cups (approx. 8 servings) 1x

Ingredients

Scale

5–6 medium ripe Roma tomatoes, cored and finely diced
1/2 medium red onion, finely diced
1–2 jalapeño peppers, deseeded and finely minced (adjust to taste)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
Juice of 1–2 fresh limes (to taste)
1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Begin by preparing your vegetables. Wash all produce thoroughly. Core and finely dice the ripe Roma tomatoes. Aim for small, even pieces – consistency is key for the best texture. Place the diced tomatoes into a large mixing bowl.
Step 2: Next, finely dice the red onion. If you prefer a milder onion flavor, you can soak the diced onion in cold water for 10-15 minutes, then drain thoroughly. Add the diced onion to the bowl with the tomatoes.
Step 3: Deseed and finely mince the jalapeño. For less heat, remove all seeds and membranes; for more heat, leave some in. Be careful when handling jalapeños and wash your hands thoroughly afterward. Add the minced jalapeño to the bowl.
Step 4: Mince the fresh garlic cloves. Fresh garlic is crucial here; garlic powder won’t give you the same bright, pungent flavor. Add the minced garlic to the other vegetables in the bowl.
Step 5: Roughly chop the fresh cilantro. Don’t over-mince it, as it can bruise easily. A nice coarse chop is perfect for this fresh salsa recipe. Add the chopped cilantro to the bowl.
Step 6: Squeeze in the fresh lime juice. The acidity of the lime juice brightens all the flavors and acts as a natural preservative. Start with the juice of one lime, and you can add more to taste later. Always use fresh lime juice.
Step 7: Season your salsa with salt and black pepper to taste. Start with about ½ teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of pepper, then taste and adjust as needed. The salt really brings out the natural flavors of the vegetables.
Step 8: Gently stir all the ingredients together until well combined. Be careful not to mash the tomatoes. Once mixed, taste the salsa and adjust seasonings – add more lime, salt, or jalapeño if desired.
Step 9: For the best flavor, cover the bowl and refrigerate your fresh salsa for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. An hour is even better! Serve chilled with your favorite tortilla chips or as a topping for various dishes.

Notes

For the best flavor, use the freshest, ripest ingredients available, especially tomatoes and cilantro. Adjust the amount of jalapeño to control the heat level. This salsa is best enjoyed within 3-4 days when stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
