Classic Chocolate-Dipped Frozen Bananas

A delightful, healthy, and easy-to-make treat featuring ripe bananas coated in a rich layer of chocolate and your favorite toppings. Perfect for a guilt-free dessert or refreshing snack.

  • Total Time: 2 hours 45 minutes (includes freezing)
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

4 ripe bananas, peeled
1 cup (170g) chocolate chips (dark, milk, or white)
1–2 tablespoons coconut oil (optional, for smoother dipping)
1/4 cup (25g) chopped nuts (e.g., peanuts, almonds)
1/4 cup (15g) shredded coconut
Pinch of flaky sea salt (optional)
8 popsicle sticks (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bananas. Peel the ripe bananas. You can either slice them into 1-inch thick rounds or cut each banana in half crosswise. If using halves, carefully insert a popsicle stick into the cut end of each banana.
Step 2: Freeze the Bananas. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the banana slices or halves in a single layer on the parchment paper, making sure they don’t touch. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for at least 2-3 hours, or until the bananas are completely solid. This is crucial for getting the chocolate to set quickly and evenly.
Step 3: Melt the Chocolate. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil (if using). Microwave on high for 30 seconds, then stir well. Continue microwaving in 15-second intervals, stirring vigorously after each, until the chocolate is smooth and fully melted. Alternatively, melt the chocolate in a double boiler over simmering water, stirring until smooth.
Step 4: Dip the Bananas. Remove the frozen bananas from the freezer. Working quickly, dip each banana slice or half into the melted chocolate, rotating to coat evenly. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off. If the chocolate starts to thicken, gently reheat it for a few seconds.
Step 5: Add Toppings (Optional). Immediately after dipping, sprinkle your desired toppings onto the chocolate-coated bananas. The cold banana will help the chocolate set almost instantly, securing the toppings in place. Popular choices include chopped peanuts, shredded coconut, rainbow sprinkles, or a pinch of flaky sea salt.
Step 6: Final Freeze & Serve. Place the chocolate-coated, topped bananas back onto the parchment-lined baking sheet. Return them to the freezer for another 15-30 minutes, or until the chocolate is fully hardened. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2-3 weeks.

Notes

For best results, use very ripe bananas (with brown spots) for maximum sweetness. Store leftover chocolate-dipped bananas in an airtight container in the freezer, separated by parchment paper, to prevent sticking. They’ll last for up to 2-3 weeks.
