Ingredients
1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth
1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
1/4 cup rice vinegar
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon cold water
4–6 dried red chilies (optional)
1 tablespoon neutral oil
Instructions
Step 1: In a medium bowl, whisk together the broth, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and hoisin sauce until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
Step 2: In a separate small bowl, mix the cornstarch and cold water together to create a smooth slurry and set aside.
Step 3: Heat the oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and dried chilies. Sauté for 1 minute until fragrant but not browned.
Step 4: Pour the liquid mixture into the saucepan with the aromatics. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
