Perfectly Charred Grilled Asparagus

Simple yet sublime grilled asparagus recipes that yield tender-crisp spears with a delightful smoky char, perfect for any meal.

  • Total Time: 15-17 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 pound fresh asparagus, woody ends snapped off
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon sea salt, or to taste
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
Optional: 1/2 lemon, for squeezing after grilling
Optional: 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese, for topping

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Asparagus. Rinse the asparagus spears thoroughly under cold water and pat them completely dry with a clean kitchen towel. Snap off the tough, woody ends from each spear.
Step 2: Season the Asparagus. In a large bowl, toss the trimmed asparagus spears with extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Ensure each spear is lightly and evenly coated.
Step 3: Preheat the Grill. Preheat your outdoor grill to medium-high heat (about 400-450°F or 200-230°C). Clean the grill grates thoroughly and lightly oil them to prevent sticking.
Step 4: Grill the Asparagus. Arrange the seasoned asparagus spears in a single layer directly on the hot grill grates, placing them perpendicular to the grates so they don’t fall through. If using very thin spears or a crowded grill, a grill basket can be used.
Step 5: Cook Until Tender-Crisp. Grill for 3-5 minutes, turning the asparagus occasionally with tongs, until the spears are tender-crisp and have developed appealing char marks. Cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of the spears.
Step 6: Remove and Serve. Immediately remove the grilled asparagus from the grill. Transfer to a serving platter. Optionally, squeeze fresh lemon juice over the top and/or sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese before serving. Enjoy these simple yet delicious grilled asparagus recipes hot as a side dish.

Notes

For best results, use fresh, firm asparagus. Thicker spears are often preferred for grilling as they are less likely to overcook. Don’t be afraid of a little char; it adds fantastic flavor!
