Easy & Delicious Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteaks

A simplified, incredibly flavorful take on the classic Philly Cheesesteak, using ground beef for convenience without sacrificing taste. Perfect for a weeknight meal, these ground beef Philly cheesesteaks are easy and delicious.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 tbsp olive oil
1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
1 large green bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 lb ground beef (80/20 or 85/15 recommended)
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp salt
8 slices provolone cheese (or white American cheese)
4 hoagie rolls, split and lightly toasted

Instructions

Step 1: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and bell peppers. Sauté, stirring occasionally, until soft and slightly caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
Step 2: Return the skillet to medium-high heat. Add ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until fully browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
Step 3: Season the browned ground beef with garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Stir well to combine the seasonings.
Step 4: Return the cooked onions and peppers to the skillet with the ground beef. Stir everything together to combine thoroughly.
Step 5: Reduce heat to low. Arrange the cheese slices evenly over the meat and vegetable mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid or foil for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted and gooey.
Step 6: While the cheese melts, lightly toast the hoagie rolls. Once toasted, carefully scoop the cheesy ground beef mixture into each hoagie roll. Serve immediately and enjoy your easy delicious ground beef Philly cheesesteaks!

Notes

For best results, use fresh deli-sliced provolone or white American cheese. Don’t overcrowd the skillet when cooking the vegetables to ensure they caramelize properly. You can pre-chop vegetables to save time on busy weeknights.
