Ingredients
1.5 lbs 80/20 ground beef
1 large egg
1/4 cup plain breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, gently combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
Step 2: Use your hands and mix the ingredients just until combined. Avoid overmixing, as this can lead to tough patties.
Step 3: Divide the meat mixture into 6 equal portions. Lightly wet your hands with cold water to prevent sticking, then gently form each portion into a patty about 3/4 to 1 inch thick.
Step 4: Create a small indentation (about 1/2 inch deep) in the center of each patty with your thumb. This helps the patty cook evenly and retain its shape.
Step 5: Place the formed patties on a plate or baking sheet lined with parchment paper. If not cooking immediately, cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.
Step 6: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 400-450°F / 200-230°C) or a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the cooking surface.
Step 7: Place the patties on the hot grill or skillet. Cook for 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, 5-6 minutes per side for medium, or 6-7 minutes per side for well-done.
Step 8: Avoid pressing down on the patties with your spatula while cooking, as this expels juices. Flip only once during cooking.
Step 9: If adding cheese, place a slice on top of each patty during the last 1-2 minutes of cooking to allow it to melt.
Step 10: Remove the cooked patties from the heat and let them rest for 5 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute for a tender and juicy burger. Serve on your favorite buns with desired toppings.
Notes
For best results, do not overmix the meat and allow patties to rest after cooking. You can prepare patties ahead of time and refrigerate.
