Ingredients
1 cup dried hibiscus flowers (Flor de Jamaica)
6 cups filtered water
1-inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced
1/2 cup honey or agave nectar (adjust to taste)
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
Fresh mint leaves and lime slices for garnish
Instructions
Step 1: Rinse the dried hibiscus flowers in a fine-mesh strainer under cold running water to remove any impurities or dust.
Step 2: In a large pot, combine the 6 cups of filtered water and the sliced ginger. Bring the water to a rolling boil.
Step 3: Add the rinsed hibiscus flowers to the boiling water. Remove the pot from the heat immediately to prevent the tea from becoming overly bitter.
Step 4: Cover the pot and let the mixture steep for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how strong and tart you want your hibiscus tea recipe to be.
Step 5: Strain the tea through a fine-mesh sieve into a heat-proof pitcher, discarding the spent flowers and ginger slices.
Step 6: While the tea is still warm, stir in the honey or agave nectar until fully dissolved. Add the lime juice and stir again.
Step 7: Serve immediately as a hot tea, or let it cool to room temperature before refrigerating for a refreshing iced hibiscus tea recipe served over plenty of ice.
Notes
For a sugar-free version, replace the honey with a few drops of liquid stevia or monk fruit sweetener. This hibiscus tea recipe can be kept in the fridge for up to 5 days.
