Pile of golden homemade baked pita chips in a bowl with a side of hummus and fresh herbs.

Homemade Baked Pita Chips

Crispy, savory, and incredibly easy to make, these homemade baked pita chips are far superior to any store-bought version. Perfect for dipping into hummus, salsa, or enjoying on their own, they’re a versatile snack that comes together in minutes.

  • Total Time: 22 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

6–8 whole pita breads (thin or medium thickness)
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
Pinch of paprika or za’atar (optional, for flavor variation)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper for easier cleanup, if desired.
Step 2: Stack 2-3 pita breads at a time and cut them into 6-8 triangles each using a sharp knife or pizza cutter. Aim for consistent sizes for even baking.
Step 3: Place the cut pita triangles in a large bowl. Drizzle with the extra virgin olive oil, ensuring each piece is lightly coated. You can use your hands to gently toss and distribute the oil.
Step 4: Sprinkle the pita triangles generously with garlic powder, onion powder (if using), dried oregano (if using), salt, black pepper, and any other desired seasonings like paprika or za’atar. Toss again to ensure all pieces are evenly seasoned.
Step 5: Arrange the seasoned pita triangles in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets. Make sure they are not overcrowded, as this will prevent them from crisping properly. Use two sheets if necessary.
Step 6: Bake for 8-12 minutes, or until the pita chips are golden brown and crispy. Halfway through the baking time (around 4-6 minutes), flip the chips over to ensure even browning on both sides. Keep a close eye on them, as they can burn quickly.
Step 7: Once baked to perfection, remove the homemade baked pita chips from the oven and transfer them immediately to a wire rack to cool completely. Cooling on a rack helps them achieve and maintain their ultimate crispness. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

For extra flavor, try brushing the pita with melted butter instead of olive oil and sprinkling with cinnamon sugar for a sweet variation. Ensure your pita bread is fresh; stale pita won’t crisp as well. Store cooled pita chips in an airtight container for up to 5-7 days.
