Classic Homemade Cocktail Sauce

A vibrant and zesty homemade cocktail sauce recipe that’s incredibly easy to make and far superior to any store-bought version. Perfect for shrimp, oysters, and more!

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 1.5 cups 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup good quality ketchup
2–4 tablespoons prepared horseradish (adjust to taste, or use freshly grated)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce (like Tabasco, optional, adjust to taste)
1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

Step 1: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the ketchup, prepared horseradish, fresh lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce (if using).
Step 2: Add the fine sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir vigorously with a spoon or whisk until all the ingredients are well combined and the sauce has a uniform consistency.
Step 3: Taste the cocktail sauce and adjust the seasonings as needed. Add more horseradish or hot sauce for extra heat, more lemon juice for additional tang, or another pinch of salt to enhance the flavors.
Step 4: Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap or transfer the sauce to an airtight container. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or ideally several hours, to allow the flavors to meld and develop.
Step 5: Before serving, give the homemade cocktail sauce another quick stir. Transfer it to a small serving bowl and garnish with a lemon wedge or a sprig of fresh parsley, if desired. Serve chilled alongside your favorite seafood.

Notes

For the best flavor, make this homemade cocktail sauce at least 30 minutes in advance and chill it in the refrigerator. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully. You can easily double or triple the recipe for larger gatherings. The heat from the horseradish will mellow slightly over time, so if you like it extra spicy, you might want to add a bit more just before serving.
