Homemade Thousand Island Dressing

This classic homemade Thousand Island Dressing is rich, creamy, tangy, and subtly sweet, making it the perfect accompaniment for salads, sandwiches, and as a delicious dipping sauce. Far superior to store-bought versions!

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 1.5 cups (12 servings) 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup Mayonnaise (full-fat recommended)
1/4 cup Ketchup
2 tablespoons Sweet Pickle Relish (or finely chopped gherkins)
1 tablespoon finely minced Red Onion (or yellow onion)
1 tablespoon fresh Lemon Juice
1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
1/2 teaspoon Paprika
1/2 teaspoon Granulated Sugar (adjust to taste)
1/4 teaspoon Salt (or to taste)
1/8 teaspoon Black Pepper (freshly ground, or to taste)

Instructions

Step 1: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, minced onion, fresh lemon juice, and Worcestershire sauce. Whisk until thoroughly combined and smooth.
Step 2: Add the paprika, granulated sugar, salt, and black pepper to the bowl. Continue to whisk until all the seasonings are fully incorporated and the dressing is evenly colored.
Step 3: Taste the thousand island dressing and adjust the seasonings as needed. You might want a little more lemon juice for tang, sugar for sweetness, or salt and pepper for overall balance.
Step 4: Cover the bowl tightly and refrigerate the homemade thousand island dressing for at least 30 minutes before serving. Chilling allows the flavors to meld and deepen, resulting in a more delicious dressing. It can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Notes

For best flavor, allow the dressing to chill for at least 30 minutes before serving. This gives the flavors time to meld beautifully. You can customize the sweetness and tang by adjusting the amount of sugar and lemon juice. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
