Clear homemade hummingbird nectar being poured into a red hummingbird feeder

Homemade Hummingbird Nectar

A safe, simple, and effective 4-to-1 sugar water solution designed to attract and nourish hummingbirds in your garden.

  • Total Time: PT10M
  • Yield: 4.5 cups 1x

Ingredients

Scale

4 cups water
1 cup granulated white sugar (pure cane sugar)

Instructions

Step 1: Combine the water and sugar in a medium-sized saucepan.
Step 2: Bring the mixture to a low boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally to ensure the sugar is completely dissolved.
Step 3: Boil for 1-2 minutes to help eliminate any impurities in the water and sugar.
Step 4: Remove the pot from the heat and let the mixture cool completely to room temperature.
Step 5: Pour the cooled nectar into clean hummingbird feeders and store any remaining liquid in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

Notes

Always clean your feeders every 3-5 days, or more often in extreme heat, to prevent mold growth. Never use red dye or honey.
