Japanese Strawberry Smashed Milk Dessert

A refreshing and aesthetic Japanese cafe-style drink made with fresh smashed strawberries, sweetener, and creamy milk.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 2 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups fresh ripe strawberries, hulled
3 tablespoons granulated sugar or honey
2 cups whole milk (or oat milk for vegan)
Ice cubes (optional)
Fresh mint for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Wash the strawberries thoroughly and remove the green hulls. Pat them dry with a paper towel.
Step 2: Place the strawberries in a medium-sized bowl and use a fork or potato masher to crush them until they are broken down into small chunks but not quite a smooth puree.
Step 3: Add the sugar or honey to the smashed strawberries and stir well to combine. Let the mixture sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes to allow the juices to release.
Step 4: Divide the strawberry mixture equally between two tall glasses, ensuring the fruit and syrup settle at the bottom.
Step 5: If using ice, add a few cubes to each glass. Gently pour the milk into each glass. For a layered look, pour the milk slowly over the back of a spoon.
Step 6: Garnish with a fresh strawberry or a sprig of mint. Serve the Japanese Strawberry Smashed Milk Dessert with a wide straw or a long spoon to stir before drinking.

Notes

For the best flavor, use strawberries that are at the peak of ripeness. If using plant-based milk, oat milk provides the best creamy consistency for this dessert.
