lemonade recipe - Pitcher of classic homemade lemonade with fresh lemon slices and mint

Classic Homemade Lemonade

A classic, perfectly balanced homemade lemonade recipe, featuring fresh lemons and a customizable simple syrup for the ultimate refreshing summer drink.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings (approx. 2 quarts) 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water (for simple syrup)
1.5 to 2 cups fresh lemon juice (from 6–8 medium lemons)
3–4 cups cold filtered water (for mixing)
Lemon slices and fresh mint for garnish (optional)
Ice cubes

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the simple syrup. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved. Do not bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let it cool completely to room temperature. This is a crucial step for a smooth lemonade recipe.
Step 2: Juice the lemons. Roll the lemons on a counter with light pressure to maximize juice extraction. Cut them in half and use a citrus reamer or juicer to extract 1.5 to 2 cups of fresh lemon juice. Strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any pulp or seeds, ensuring a smooth base for your lemonade recipe.
Step 3: Combine ingredients. In a large pitcher (at least 2-quart capacity), pour in the cooled simple syrup and the strained fresh lemon juice.
Step 4: Add water and adjust. Add 3 cups of cold filtered water to the pitcher. Stir everything together thoroughly. Taste the lemonade. If it’s too tart, add another 1/2 to 1 cup of cold water until it reaches your desired balance of sweetness and tartness. This is where you personalize your lemonade recipe.
Step 5: Chill and serve. For the best flavor, cover the pitcher and chill the homemade lemonade in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. This allows the flavors to meld. Serve over ice with fresh lemon slices and a sprig of mint, if desired. Enjoy your refreshing lemonade recipe!

Notes

For an extra burst of lemon flavor, add a few strips of lemon zest to your simple syrup while it’s heating, then strain them out before cooling. Always taste and adjust water and sweetness to your preference.
