Ingredients
2 lbs frozen crinkle-cut or steak fries
1 tbsp olive oil (optional, for crispier fries)
1 lb ground beef (80/20 recommended)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or Colby Jack, or a blend)
1/2 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand)
Optional toppings: chopped red onion, pickled jalapeños, fresh cilantro, sour cream
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) or according to frozen fries package directions. If desired, lightly toss fries with olive oil and a pinch of salt. Arrange fries in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and extra crispy.
Step 2: While fries are baking, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until fully browned. Drain off any excess fat. Season the cooked beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder, stirring to combine.
Step 3: Once fries are crispy, remove them from the oven. If using a different oven-safe dish, transfer the fries. Evenly spoon the seasoned ground beef over the hot fries. Sprinkle the shredded cheese generously over the beef and fries.
Step 4: Return the dish to the oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted and bubbly. For an extra golden top, you can broil for the last 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
Step 5: Carefully remove the loaded fries from the oven. Generously drizzle with BBQ sauce. Add any desired optional toppings like chopped red onion, pickled jalapeños, or fresh cilantro. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
For best results, use freshly shredded cheese as it melts smoother than pre-shredded. Adjust BBQ sauce and seasonings to your personal preference. This dish is best served immediately for optimal crispiness of the fries.
