Ingredients
8–10 fresh mint leaves, plus a sprig for garnish
1/2 oz simple syrup (1:1 sugar to water)
2 oz Kentucky Bourbon (e.g., Woodford Reserve, Maker’s Mark)
Crushed ice
Instructions
Step 1: In a julep cup or a sturdy rock glass, gently muddle the fresh mint leaves with the simple syrup. Do not over-muddle; just enough to release the oils and fragrance, about 4-5 gentle presses.
Step 2: Add the bourbon to the cup.
Step 3: Fill the cup generously with crushed ice.
Step 4: Stir vigorously with a bar spoon until the cup becomes frosty on the outside, indicating proper chilling. This also helps to dilute the drink slightly.
Step 5: Mound more crushed ice on top, creating an attractive dome.
Step 6: Garnish with a fresh, aromatic sprig of mint, making sure to slap it gently between your hands first to release its fragrance. Serve immediately.
Notes
For the best results, use good quality Kentucky bourbon. Fresh, vibrant mint is crucial for the authentic flavor. You can make simple syrup ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
