mulberry recipes - Warm mulberry crisp with a golden oat topping, served in a rustic baking dish.

Grandma’s Classic Mulberry Crisp

A comforting and rustic dessert featuring sweet-tart mulberries baked under a golden, buttery oat crumble topping, reminiscent of childhood summers.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

4 cups fresh mulberries (or frozen, unthawed)
1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste based on mulberry sweetness)
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 cup old-fashioned oats
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly butter an 8×8 inch (20×20 cm) baking dish.
Step 2: In a large bowl, gently combine the mulberries, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, and lemon juice. Toss until the mulberries are evenly coated.
Step 3: Pour the mulberry mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
Step 4: In a separate medium bowl, combine the old-fashioned oats, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Whisk to combine.
Step 5: Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry topping ingredients. Using your fingertips or a pastry blender, cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining.
Step 6: Evenly sprinkle the crisp topping over the mulberry filling in the baking dish.
Step 7: Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the mulberry filling is bubbly and tender. If the topping browns too quickly, you can lightly tent it with aluminum foil.
Step 8: Remove from the oven and let the crisp cool for at least 15-20 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly.

Notes

For best results, use fresh, ripe mulberries. If using frozen, do not thaw before adding to the filling. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an ultimate treat. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
