Ingredients
2 slices of white or sourdough bread
1 tbsp butter, softened
2 tbsp pizza sauce
1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
6–8 slices of pepperoni
1/4 tsp dried Italian seasoning
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your cast iron pie iron by placing it near the campfire coals for a few minutes.
Step 2: Generously butter one side of each slice of bread.
Step 3: Open the pie iron and place one slice of bread inside, butter-side down.
Step 4: Spread the pizza sauce onto the bread, then layer on the mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, and Italian seasoning.
Step 5: Place the second slice of bread on top, butter-side up.
Step 6: Close and latch the pie iron, trimming off any bread crusts that stick out of the sides.
Step 7: Hold the iron over hot coals (avoid direct high flames) for 2-3 minutes per side.
Step 8: Periodically check for a golden-brown crust. Once toasted, carefully remove the sandwich and let it cool for 1-2 minutes before eating.
Notes
Ensure the fire has a good bed of coals for the most even cooking. Do not overfill or the bread won’t seal!
