Ingredients
6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon black gel food coloring
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup old-fashioned oats
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×9 inch baking dish.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, ginger, and black gel food coloring. Toss until the apples are evenly coated in the dark ‘poison’ mixture.
Step 3: Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
Step 4: In another bowl, mix the flour, oats, and brown sugar. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the cold butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 5: Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apple filling.
Step 6: Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the filling is bubbling and the topping is golden brown.
Step 7: Allow the poison apple crisp recipe to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving to let the juices set.
Notes
Use gel food coloring for the best color; liquid coloring may water down the filling.
