pudgy pie recipes - A golden brown pizza pudgy pie being pulled apart to show melted cheese over a campfire.

Classic Pizza Campfire Pudgy Pie

A nostalgic and delicious campfire staple featuring crispy toasted bread filled with molten cheese, savory pepperoni, and pizza sauce.

  • Total Time: PT15M
  • Yield: 1 pie 1x

Ingredients

Scale

2 slices white bread or Texas toast
1 tablespoon salted butter, softened
2 tablespoons pizza sauce
1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
6–8 slices pepperoni
Optional: Dried oregano or garlic powder

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat your cast-iron pie iron by placing it over the campfire coals for a few minutes until warm.
Step 2: Generously butter one side of each slice of bread.
Step 3: Open the pie iron and place one slice of bread inside, buttered-side down against the metal.
Step 4: Spread the pizza sauce onto the bread, then layer the mozzarella cheese and pepperoni on top.
Step 5: Place the second slice of bread on top of the fillings, buttered-side up.
Step 6: Close the pie iron and lock the handles. Trim away any bread crust that sticks out from the edges.
Step 7: Cook over hot coals for 2-3 minutes per side, occasionally opening the iron slightly to check for a golden-brown finish.
Step 8: Carefully remove the pie from the iron and let it cool for 2 minutes before eating.

Notes

Always use a bed of coals rather than an active flame to prevent burning. Season your cast-iron iron before first use to ensure a non-stick surface.
