An adorable snowman-shaped cheese ball decorated with pretzel arms, a carrot nose, and olive eyes, surrounded by various crackers on a festive holiday platter.

Festive Snowman Cheese Ball

A charming and delicious snowman cheese ball perfect for a festive holiday appetizer. This creamy, savory spread, shaped into an adorable snowman and served with crackers, is a true crowd-pleaser and an instant conversation starter for any Christmas party or winter gathering.

  • Total Time: 2 hours 20 minutes (includes chilling)
  • Yield: 16 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions (white and green parts)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup cooked and crumbled bacon (optional)
For Decoration:
2 black olive slices (for eyes)
1 small carrot piece, shaped into a triangle (for nose)
Small dried cranberries or red bell pepper pieces (for mouth/buttons)
2 mini pretzel sticks (for arms)
Small cracker piece or bell pepper cut-out (for hat)
Assorted crackers and vegetable sticks for serving

Instructions

Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded sharp cheddar, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Beat with a hand mixer or sturdy spatula until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Ensure cream cheese is at room temperature for best results.
Step 2: Gently fold in the chopped green onions and bacon bits (if using) until evenly distributed throughout the cheese mixture. Do not overmix.
Step 3: Divide the cheese mixture into two portions: one larger portion (about 60% of the mix) for the snowman’s body and one slightly smaller portion (about 40%) for the snowman’s head. Shape the larger portion into a sphere approximately 3-4 inches in diameter and the smaller portion into a sphere about 2.5-3 inches in diameter.
Step 4: Tightly wrap each cheese ball individually in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow them to firm up and for the flavors to meld. This step is crucial for easy handling and decorating.
Step 5: Once thoroughly chilled, unwrap the cheese balls. On a serving platter, gently stack the smaller cheese ball on top of the larger one to form the snowman shape. A small dab of cream cheese between them can help secure them if needed.
Step 6: Begin decorating your snowman. Place the two black olive slices for the eyes and the triangular carrot piece for the nose. Arrange small dried cranberries or red bell pepper pieces to form a mouth and buttons down the front of the snowman.
Step 7: Carefully insert the two mini pretzel sticks into the sides of the larger cheese ball to create the snowman’s arms. For a festive scarf, wrap a line of dried cranberries or a thin strip of red bell pepper around the snowman’s “neck” area.
Step 8: Complete the snowman’s look with a “hat.” Use a small square cracker piece, a mini bell pepper cut-out, or another creative edible item for the top hat. Position it gently on the smaller cheese ball.
Step 9: Arrange an assortment of crackers, such as water crackers, whole-grain crackers, and pretzel crisps, around the base of the snowman. Add fresh vegetable sticks like carrot, celery, and cucumber for dipping options.
Step 10: Allow the snowman cheese ball to sit at room temperature for about 15-20 minutes before serving. This softens the cheese slightly, making it easier to spread and enhancing its creamy texture. Serve immediately and enjoy your festive creation!

Notes

For best results, always use full-fat cream cheese and shred your own cheddar. The cheese ball can be made up to 2 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator (undecorated). Decorate just before serving to keep the pretzel arms and carrot nose crisp.
