Ingredients
6–7 medium firm pears (like Bosc, Anjou, or Bartlett), peeled, cored, and sliced (about 6 cups)
1/2 cup granulated sugar (or less, depending on pear sweetness)
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, diced
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish or a similar sized oven-safe dish.
Step 2: In a large bowl, combine the sliced pears, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Toss gently until the pears are evenly coated.
Step 3: Pour the pear mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading them out into an even layer.
Step 4: In a separate medium bowl, prepare the crumble topping. Combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, and an additional pinch of cinnamon. Mix well.
Step 5: Add the cold, diced unsalted butter to the dry topping ingredients. Using your fingertips, a pastry blender, or two knives, cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining.
Step 6: Sprinkle the oat crumble topping evenly over the pear filling in the baking dish.
Step 7: Place the baking dish on a baking sheet and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the pear filling is bubbly and tender when pierced with a fork.
Step 8: Remove from the oven and let the crumble cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set slightly.
Notes
This crumble is fantastic served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of crème anglaise. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently in the oven or microwave. You can also prepare the pear filling and crumble topping ahead of time and store them separately in the fridge, assembling and baking just before serving.
