Ingredients
2.5 lbs (about 10–12 medium) fresh plums, pitted and sliced into 1-inch pieces
1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust based on plum sweetness)
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and diced
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish or a similar-sized oven-safe dish.
Step 2: In a large bowl, combine the sliced plums, granulated sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss gently until the plums are evenly coated.
Step 3: Pour the plum mixture into your prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
Step 4: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, light brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt.
Step 5: Add the cold, diced unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Using your fingertips, a pastry blender, or two forks, work the butter into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
Step 6: Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the plum filling in the baking dish.
Step 7: Place the baking dish on a baking sheet and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the plum filling is bubbling and tender.
Step 8: Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 15-20 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with your favorite accompaniments.
Notes
For best results, use ripe but firm plums. If your plums are very tart, you might want to increase the granulated sugar in the filling by 1-2 tablespoons. This crumble is excellent served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of Greek yogurt.
