sun tea recipe - A large glass jar of sun tea with lemon slices steeping in direct sunlight on a patio.

Classic Sun Tea

Harness the power of the sun to create the smoothest, most refreshing iced tea you’ve ever tasted. This classic sun tea recipe is simple, energy-efficient, and perfectly customizable for a delicious summer beverage.

  • Total Time: 2 hours 5 minutes - 4 hours 5 minutes
  • Yield: 1 gallon 1x

Ingredients

Scale

8–10 regular-sized black tea bags (or 4–5 family-sized)
1 gallon filtered cold water
Optional: lemon slices, mint sprigs, sweeteners to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Choose a clean, large, heat-proof glass jar or pitcher (approximately 1-gallon capacity) with a lid. Ensure it’s free from any residue.
Step 2: Place the tea bags into the bottom of the glass jar. Arrange them so they are somewhat spread out and not clumped together.
Step 3: Carefully fill the jar with 1 gallon of cold, filtered water, ensuring all tea bags are fully submerged. If desired, add lemon slices or mint sprigs at this stage for added flavor.
Step 4: Securely place the lid on the jar. This is important to keep out dust, insects, and other environmental elements while steeping.
Step 5: Place the covered jar in a spot outdoors that receives direct, strong sunlight. A sunny patio, deck, or even a bright windowsill will work. Allow the tea to steep for 2 to 4 hours. The steeping time will vary depending on the intensity of the sun and your desired tea strength. Observe the color—it should deepen to a rich amber for black tea.
Step 6: Once the tea has reached your preferred strength, bring the jar indoors. Carefully remove and discard the tea bags, gently squeezing them to extract any remaining liquid and flavor.
Step 7: Refrigerate the sun tea immediately until it is thoroughly chilled, which typically takes at least 1-2 hours. Serving it cold is crucial for the best taste and safety.
Step 8: Serve the chilled sun tea over ice. Offer optional garnishes like fresh lemon wedges, extra mint sprigs, or sweeteners like simple syrup or honey, allowing everyone to customize their drink.

Notes

Always use a clean, food-grade glass container for making sun tea. If conditions are cloudy or if you’re concerned about bacterial growth in lukewarm water, it’s safer to use the refrigerator cold-brew method instead. Enjoy within 2-3 days for best freshness.
