Ingredients
1 gallon fresh, filtered water
6–8 standard-sized black tea bags (or green tea, herbal tea of choice)
Optional: lemon slices, peach slices, mint sprigs, or other fruit for infusion
Optional: sugar, honey, or simple syrup to taste
Instructions
Step 1: Gather your supplies. You’ll need a clean, large glass jar (a gallon size is ideal) with a tight-fitting lid, your chosen tea bags, and fresh, filtered water.
Step 2: Place the tea bags into the glass jar. For a stronger brew, use 8 bags; for a milder flavor, use 6.
Step 3: Carefully fill the jar with fresh, filtered water, leaving about an inch of space from the top. If adding optional fruits or herbs, add them now.
Step 4: Secure the lid tightly on the jar. This prevents any contaminants from entering and helps create a warm environment for steeping.
Step 5: Place the jar in a spot where it will receive direct sunlight for 3 to 5 hours. The tea’s color will darken as it brews. Adjust steeping time based on sun intensity and desired strength.
Step 6: Once the tea has reached your preferred strength, bring the jar indoors. Carefully remove and discard the tea bags (and any added fruits or herbs).
Step 7: Refrigerate the sun tea immediately until thoroughly chilled. This is important for safety and flavor.
Step 8: Serve over ice. Sweeten to taste with sugar, honey, or simple syrup if desired. Garnish with fresh lemon slices or mint sprigs for an extra touch of freshness.
Notes
Always use fresh, filtered water for the best taste. Ensure the lid is tightly sealed during steeping to prevent contamination. Do not steep for more than 5-6 hours to minimize bacterial growth risk, and always refrigerate promptly after brewing. Consume within 2-3 days.
