tomato sandwich recipe - A close up of a classic southern tomato sandwich on white bread

Classic Southern Tomato Sandwich

A quintessential summer lunch featuring thick slices of garden-fresh tomatoes, creamy mayonnaise, and soft white bread.

  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 1 sandwich 1x

Ingredients

Scale

2 slices thick-cut white bread
1 large ripe heirloom or beefsteak tomato
2 tablespoons high-quality mayonnaise (like Duke’s or Hellmann’s)
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions

Step 1: Slice the tomato into thick rounds, approximately 1/2-inch thick.
Step 2: Lay the tomato slices on a plate or paper towel and season both sides generously with sea salt and black pepper. Let them sit for 2 minutes to draw out the juices.
Step 3: Spread 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise onto each slice of bread, ensuring the edges are well-covered.
Step 4: Place the seasoned tomato slices on one piece of bread, layering them to cover the entire surface.
Step 5: Place the second slice of bread on top, mayo-side down, and press gently.
Step 6: Let the sandwich rest for 30 seconds, then cut diagonally and serve immediately.

Notes

Always use room-temperature tomatoes for the best flavor; refrigeration can make tomatoes mealy.
