yum yum sauce recipe - A small bowl of pale pink yum yum sauce next to a plate of hibachi shrimp and rice.

Homemade Japanese Steakhouse Yum Yum Sauce

A creamy, tangy, and sweet Japanese hibachi steakhouse sauce that is easy to make at home in under 10 minutes.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes (plus chilling time)
  • Yield: 1.5 cups 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 1/4 cups Mayonnaise
1 tablespoon Tomato Paste
1 tablespoon Melted Butter (unsalted)
1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder
1/2 teaspoon Paprika
1 1/2 tablespoons White Sugar
1 tablespoon Rice Vinegar
2 tablespoons Water (adjust for consistency)

Instructions

Step 1: In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, tomato paste, and melted butter until smooth.
Step 2: Add the sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika, and stir well to combine.
Step 3: Stir in the rice vinegar and 1 tablespoon of water. Check the consistency and add more water if you prefer a thinner sauce.
Step 4: Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (overnight is best) to allow the flavors to meld before serving.

Notes

Always use rice vinegar for the best flavor. Letting the sauce sit in the fridge is the most important step for taste.
